Ticketed night or private booking

Four questions before you sell tickets on a wedding date

Public events can be good business for a venue, but they compete with your best paying customer.

What date are you giving up?

A ticketed night blocks the slot a wedding would have used. Price that trade first.

How many tickets break even?

Divide your event costs by what one ticket puts in your pocket after fees and GST.

Who carries the crowd risk?

Public entry means security, permits, music rights and insurance that a private booking does not need.

Will the tickets sell in your city?

A 350-ticket comedy night works in a metro and may not in a smaller town.

Ticketing is a good tool for the wrong job, most of the time

Venue owners land on Eventbrite comparisons for two very different reasons. Some run a public event once in a while, such as a stand-up night, a wedding expo or a food festival, and want a ticket page. Others have heard "Eventbrite" as shorthand for event software and want a booking system for weddings. The first group needs ticketing. The second group needs a calendar, a quote, an advance receipt and a GST invoice, and no amount of ticketing software supplies those. Eventbrite's own pages describe ticket sales, registration, marketing tools, reserved seating and timed entry. They do not describe renting a hall by date, which is what your phone rings about.

On fees, use the vendor's published numbers, and note their limits. Eventbrite's help page gives a US service fee of 3.7% plus USD 1.79 per ticket, and 2.9% of the order for payment processing. Free events carry no fees. Its pricing page lists the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Ireland as the countries where the plans apply, and India is not among them (Eventbrite, September 2026). So we do not know the rate an Indian organiser would get, and neither does any blog that claims to. Ask for it in writing, including who pays GST on the fee and in which currency the payout arrives.

A fixed per-ticket fee bites hardest on cheap tickets, so run the numbers for your own price point. Take 350 tickets at Rs 800, which is Rs 2.8 lakh in sales. With the percentage parts of the US structure and an assumed 18% GST on tickets, fees come to about Rs 19,900 before any fixed per-ticket amount. That is money paid for a ticket page, on top of the artist, sound, security and staff. The calculator on this page lets you enter the real fee terms, choose whether the guest or you absorb them, and see the profit after every cost.

The number that changes decisions is not the fee. It is the date. Say the ticketed night costs Rs 2.9 lakh to put on: Rs 1.5 lakh for talent, Rs 60,000 for sound and lights, Rs 35,000 for staff, Rs 25,000 for permits and music rights, Rs 20,000 for marketing. Sales of Rs 2.8 lakh leave you Rs 10,000 short. The wedding that would have taken the same evening pays Rs 2.5 lakh of rent and leaves Rs 1.2 lakh of food margin, so Rs 3.7 lakh. To match that wedding you would have to sell about 825 tickets at Rs 800, and a 500-guest hall cannot seat them. The public night only wins when the date would otherwise stay empty.

That is the rule of thumb we would use. Sell tickets on dates that private customers do not want: a Tuesday, an off-season fortnight, the week after a long weekend. Keep the wedding dates for weddings. And when you do run a ticketed night, treat it as a separate small business inside the hall, with its own budget, its own permits and its own break-even. A public event that merely breaks even still costs you a booked customer's goodwill if you cancel a wedding to make room for it.

If you sell tickets in India, look at the tools built for Indian payments alongside Eventbrite, because UPI and INR settlement matter. Check each one's fee schedule, payout timing and support the same way. Meanwhile, keep the private side of the hall in a system built for it. The two do not compete. A ticketing page brings strangers in for one evening, and a venue system holds the calendar, the advances and the GST invoices that pay your rent the rest of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions: eventbrite alternative venues

Everything you need to know about eventbrite alternative venues for Indian venue, banquet, and catering operations.

No, not for taking bookings. Eventbrite sells tickets to public events, and it has private and invite-only settings for guest lists. A wedding hall needs a rental calendar with date locking, quotes, advance receipts, a cancellation rule and a GST invoice with hall rent at 18% and food at 5%. None of those belong to a ticketing platform, so use a venue system for the bookings.
