What a banquet needs

Four things a restaurant POS rarely does for a hall

These are the jobs that decide whether a banquet system fits, whichever brand you compare.

Slots per hall

Morning and evening slots are locked per hall, so a second booking for the same slot is refused instead of accepted.

Two tax rates on one bill

Food lines at 5% and hall or decor lines at 18% on one invoice, with advance receipt vouchers adjusted on the final bill.

Quotes on WhatsApp

Per-plate quotes and payment receipts go to the client's WhatsApp instead of a printed slip.

Quantities from guest count

A confirmed guest count becomes quantities the kitchen can shop from, so the chef stops copying menus by hand.

Who Toast is for, and what an Indian caterer should run instead

Toast is restaurant software. It runs table service, handheld ordering, kitchen screens, online ordering and card payments, and it was built around the American market. Toast's own support documentation on regional differences covers Australia, Canada, Ireland and the UK besides the United States, and India is not on that list as of September 2026. That changes the question this page has to answer. For most people who type 'Toast alternative' on an Indian phone, the real question is not Toast versus Kaliquid. It is what to run a hall and a kitchen on when the foreign names in every software listicle cannot be bought here. If you already operate in one of Toast's countries, the picture is different, and Toast may be the right choice for the restaurant floor.

Toast does have a catering product. Toast Catering & Events, according to third-party write-ups read in September 2026, adds banquet event orders, fulfilment tools, lead management and Google Calendar sync on top of the Toast POS, so a restaurant can take large orders without leaving its own menu and reports. That suits a 90-seat restaurant that takes twenty catering orders a week. It is a narrower job than running three halls with morning and evening slots, where the calendar, the advance schedule and the tax invoice are the product. A banquet event order is a good document for the kitchen. Deciding whether a hall is free on a muhurat Friday is a different problem, and the public pages we read do not describe multi-hall slot booking.

Rupee numbers next, with the caveats attached. Toast's pricing page lists a starter kit with higher card rates, a Point of Sale plan at $69 a month with card processing at 2.49% plus 15 cents, and a Build Your Own plan from $110 a month. Add-ons such as online ordering or a kitchen display are commonly reported at $50 to $165 a month each. At an assumed ₹88 to the dollar, $69 is about ₹6,070 a month and $110 about ₹9,680. Over 36 months the $69 plan alone comes to $2,484, roughly ₹2,18,600, before add-ons, hardware and card fees. Kaliquid's published Pro plan is ₹999 a month per hall, or ₹35,964 over the same 36 months for one hall (₹27,000 if billed yearly at ₹750 a month), and multi-venue groups get custom Enterprise pricing. The prices are not like for like, because the tools do different jobs and the card rate applies to US transactions. They still show the order of magnitude, and the spreadsheet on this page lets you replace every number with your own quote.

The gap that costs real money is tax. Take a caterer's invoice for a wedding reception: food for 400 guests at ₹850 a plate is ₹3,40,000, and a stage and lighting package is ₹80,000. Food served to guests at an ordinary venue is taxed at 5% without input credit, so ₹17,000. The stage and lighting package is a separate service at 18%, so ₹14,400. Correct GST is ₹31,400. A system that applies one rate to the whole ₹4,20,000 gets it wrong in one direction or the other. At 18% it charges ₹75,600 and overbills the client by ₹44,200. At 5% it charges ₹21,000 and leaves you ₹10,400 short on tax you still owe. Restaurant systems built for a single dine-in rate can often be set up with more than one tax, so ask for a live demo of two rates on one bill, not a yes on a call.

Who should stay where they are? A restaurant that caters a hundred-guest lunch now and then is well served by a restaurant POS with a catering add-on, and moving it to a banquet system would add cost for no gain. A business whose income is mostly halls, weddings and outdoor catering has the opposite problem. It uses a POS to run what is really a booking and billing operation, and staff fill the gaps with a diary and a spreadsheet. That is the case for a system built around slots, quotes, advances and per-plate menus, which is what Kaliquid is. What you give up is real. Toast's handheld ordering, table management and large marketplace of US integrations are things Kaliquid does not claim to match, so keep dine-in billing where it is if the restaurant floor brings in most of your revenue.

Whatever you shortlist, test it with five checks in the demo. Book two halls in two slots and try a clash. Change a guest count from 400 to 450 and watch the quote move. Put two tax rates on one bill. Take a ₹1,00,000 UPI advance and produce a receipt. Export one sample month to Tally and compare the tax totals. A tool that passes all five earns a second meeting.
